Fall Family Photos in Northern Virginia: Locations & Timing
We're a woman-led, BIPOC-owned family and wedding photography team serving Northern Virginia, Washington DC, and Richmond — and fall is genuinely our favorite time of year to shoot families, couples, and weddings. The light gets soft and golden, everyone's excited to wear a sweater for the first time in months, and the color in NOVA this time of year is honestly kind of unfair to every other season.
Here’s where we go and when to book.
When to Book Fall Family Photos in Northern Virginia
Fall color here moves in stages: trees start yellowing in late September, hit peak orange around late October into early November, keep going gold through the rest of November, and by late November into early December most trees are bare. That's a solid two-month window — the hard part isn't finding good color, it's the calendar.
Book as early as you can. It's not just us — most photographers in this area, whether they shoot weddings or families, have their fall weekends booked up well in advance. If a fall session is even a maybe for you, get on a calendar before you've fully decided on a date.

Classic "golden hour" advice says shoot the hour before sunset — but even before daylight saving ends in early November, that window collapses fast, and golden hour turns into dusk before you know it.
A few location-specific notes:
The Jefferson Memorial looks great pretty much any time of day, thanks to the monument's own lighting and architecture, so it's more forgiving if your schedule is tight.
Georgetown, Old Town Alexandria, and Bon Air Park all genuinely benefit from golden hour light, though — plan those closer to sunset, and build in a little extra buffer once the clocks change.

1. Bon Air Park Rose Garden (Arlington, VA)
Don't let the name fool you into thinking it's just roses. Bon Air Park has gorgeous tree cover and a stream running through it, and it turns beautifully in the fall — less crowded than the big DC monuments, which makes it a genuinely relaxed spot for families with younger kids who need room to run around between shots. Best in golden hour light.
2. Old Town Alexandria
Cobblestone streets, historic brick rowhouses, and just enough fall color mixed into an actually walkable, photogenic downtown. It's a great option if you want your photos to feel a little more "storybook" than "park bench," and it's easy for extended family to meet up at since it's central and easy to find. Also best closer to golden hour.

1. Thomas Jefferson Memorial
The Jefferson Memorial works well nearly any time of day, though morning gives you the most dramatic light — soft and glowy. Midday sun can wash things out and get a little flat once it's directly overhead. You also get a straight-on view of the Washington Monument across the Tidal Basin, which makes a great backdrop. One practical note: it's not the most stroller-friendly spot — there's an elevator, but it's not always running, so plan for stairs if you've got littles in a stroller. On the upside, there are public restrooms on site, which makes it an easier stop for families who need breaks. It also fits naturally into a day of sightseeing if you're already planning to be downtown.
2. Georgetown
Georgetown's biggest draw is its cobblestone streets — when fall hits, the trees lining them turn a gorgeous mix of yellow and green against the cobblestone and brick, and it's genuinely one of the most photogenic streets in the city. It has a timeless, old-DC charm that gets lost once you're surrounded by monuments and the bustle of downtown — walking through Georgetown feels like a quieter, different side of DC. Best planned for that last hour before sunset, when the light really brings out the color in the leaves and the warmth in the brick.

Yes, the more the merrier! Getting to photography decades of your family legacy makes multigenerational sessions some of our favorites. We just ask for a confirmed headcount ahead of time so we can plan timing and locations that actually have room for everyone.

Genuinely, no. This is kind of our whole thing — we're not about forced smiles or "look at the camera" energy. We give kids room to actually be kids, love to play with them to get genuine smiles, and we catch the real moments in between. Families tell us this constantly: their kids who "don't do photos" ended up having loads of fun.

We keep an eye on the forecast together and will always talk through rescheduling if the weather's genuinely bad. A little chill or overcast sky isn't a dealbreaker — some of our favorite fall photos happen on cloudy days when the light is soft and even.
That being said, your comfort and safety are always a top priority, and we will do our absolute best to reschedule you should inclement weather arise.
